I've witnessed the profound impact that comes from learning about and how to regulate the nervous system.
I adopted my daughter when she was 22 months old. Many people said she was too young to remember anything from her early life experiences. By the age of ten she was suffering from anxiety, had dropped out of school and had become reclusive. I was suffering from secondary trauma-we were in crisis.
When we eventually found the right help the starting point was learning about our nervous systems and recognising that we were both spending much of the time dysregulated. Learning how to regulate ourselves was a game changer.
The school environment was challenging for my daughter and at times we thought she would drop out of school again. My daughter is now 18 and has finished her A Levels and has started working-what a transformational journey she has had. In this age of many young people experiencing difficulties with their mental health, I think my daughter is lucky to have learnt what she has at a young age. This is a life skill which will help keep her grounded and healthy.
As a Certified Trauma Informed Coach / Mental Health Professional my mission is to spread this knowledge in schools, Housing Associations and ultimately within adoption services to equip stakeholders with the skills and knowledge to ensure that they can be curious, compassionate and ask "what has happened?" when others may present with what they see as "challenging" behaviour.
Through my partnership with The Mental Wellbeing Company, I'm committed to bringing together trauma informed practices and positive psychology to make it accessible to all.
